Le Feu, initially printed as a series in L'Œuvre before being printed separately by Flammarion, was awarded the Goncourt literary prize in 1916. Despite his realistic intentions and controversial pacifist ideals, Barbusse seemed mostly spared by the censors. Some passages were banned, but this document suggests that it was nevertheless possible to circulate them.
